SOCIAL SCIENCE FAIR
Summer
and I took a while to think, but we choose the gold guitars for the social
science fair in Invercargill. We were very excited.
I
rushed to get a free computer and went straight to the gold guitar website
while Summer read the newspaper. We both were thinking “Wow, we got a lot to
learn”. Once our books were filled with facts and information, our next step
was to think of questions for the people we will interview.
We
printed all ten paragraphs and some very colourful pictures. Summer and I
talked to Mrs Russell about whom to interview. We choose Nichole Parry and Mrs
Hewlett, but sadly she still hasn’t replied to our email. Next we choose the
brightest colours we could for our board. We choose sun bleach yellow and sky
blue. They looked great. I was very excited to use the guillotine and cut the
paper with it.
Finishing
wasn’t too hard. All that was left was gluing and I did that while Summer was
sick. I even made a model for the fair an also for Summer to see. Both of us
were very proud. I couldn’t wait to go to the Scottish hall in Invercargill.
The one that stood out was the Milk for Schools cartoon and Bonnie Millers. We
learnt so much and now know next time to not worry and have a bigger diorama.
We
loved working together and seeing others at their best we hope we can do it
again.
Social Science Fair
Everyone
from Room Five and Nine went to the Social Science Fair in Invercargill. On the way there, we all went to watch Gore
Main’s rugby tournament at the Sports Stadium. While we were watching the game
the rain started to fall and fall and fall so when the game had finished we got
back on the bus and went to the Social Science Fair.
As soon as
we got there, we had lunch. We got to
have a really good look around. In some places people got a merit, special
prize, first prize and third prize.
While
everyone was looking at the Social Science Fair, they saw really good
information and much, much more.
Everyone
started on the 19th May. I
had thought that I would not finish it in time but it turns out that I did, on
the last day.
When we
started, I was with Keira and Summer for a couple of days but then I changed my
mind. I wanted to be by myself so I asked Mrs Russell and she said yes, so I
began working and the thing I did my Social Science Fair on was The New Zealand
Flag Debate. If the Government changes it now, it will be its second time.
The placing
for the Social Science Fair were, Anikah got a merit and Bonnie got two special
prizes and a first prize and she also won $200.
THAT IS SO
COOL.

Social Science Fair
“Oh man!” We (Oakland
and Nate) thought we were never going to finish our Social Science Fair project
that we began on the 19th of May 2015. Our project was on the New
Zealand flag as were two other projects from our class. The whole of Room 9
were bustling to finish their projects.
Oakland and I (Nate) were planning on a computer copying
things from the internet and we had to concentrate very hard to get our plan
done. At some points of our hard
concentration, it got very confusing, especially what pictures we were going to
use. We also had to figure out if we were going to use the cause and effect,
and what information we were going to use of course!
We were hovering round a computer adding colour to our
paragraphs fixing mistakes and creating graphs. We had coloured coded different
sectors in different colours such as black and white, red and blue. When we
showed our work to the teacher there were a few words that even she didn’t know
of!
The arranging of the board took about 3 days. It was very
tiring. When we were traveling to the Scottish Hall we stopped at rugby to see
the Gore Main rippa rugby team. They
won. Yay!!! At the Scottish Hall, we found our board as soon as we entered. We
saw many other amazing projects with astonishing models.
Even when we had
gotten back from the Social Science Fair, we were still amazed at some of the
projects we had seen there. We both would like to do this again.

The Social Science Fair 2015
“We’re the
most far behind! What are we going to do?” said Jay. On the 19th May
Room 9 decided to do the Social Science Fair.
We (Josh T,
Jay W and Nathan G) did it together and chose deer hunting as our topic. We
started getting our information from the internet but it wasn’t enough to use.
Luckily we were supplied books by Mrs Russell. It gave us enough information to
carry on. When we read the book, we found out that there was a Gore deer
stalkers association. We emailed them a couple of questions but they never
replied.
We were
still far behind! What will we do? Then we realised we had enough information
to start typing. It took a while to do but we finished. We managed to print some
photos out. We decided ona green background for our board and then stuck the
information on it. We finally finished five minutes before the time limit.
When the day
finally came, we got to see all the entries and how good we did just to get
finished. Room Nine and Room Five went to the Scottish Hall to see how we went
in the Social Science Fair. We didn’t do as well compared to some other
entries. They were amazing!
The fair
caused arguments but at least we had fun seeing them, BUT we DON’T want to do
it again!

Social Science
I told
Alistair that we might have to do all the work at home and not to muck around!
Alistair and I had to do complete a social science assignment that was due on
the 26th of June in the Scottish Hall.
We both sat
around a computer for the first week and we looked at diseases. After that we
decided to make a bacteria model out of paper mache, a balloon, paint and pink
paper. We also made a graph with diseases in New Zealand and how many people
have died from them.
We finally
got our board and printed our data and finished our graph. I was painting the
model purple while Luis was setting out the colours. He came up with the idea
of placing small balls of pink paper all around the model. Finally, we folded
up the board and placed the model on top and put it in Mrs Russell’s car.
We got to
look at the social sciences projects that other schools made. We got lots of
information and were inspired by their creations and ideas.
Alistair and
I both thought that we should have had more information.
By Luis and Alistair
Social Science Project
“Right Room Nine you have a Social Science project to
complete, that will be presented in the Scottish Hall in five week’ time,’’ Said Mrs Russell. She forced us to do
it because she said it was an excellent opportunity.
Then everyone had to choose a topic their assignment was
going to be based on, and choose who they were going to interview. I decided to
interview nine people and after I had gathered all the information, I put it in
a bar graph to sum up and show the results of the answers. I researched 1080 so
I knew exactly what it was!
When I started designing what it would look like on the
board, I thought of a way to make it look effective. I used lime green card
board for my background and also had a glowing red sign on one side where all
my ‘For’ interviews went and I had the exact opposite on the other side. To
make it eye catching, I put small branches with leaves on around my board and
found a rat trap and made pretend 1080 for my model! It was harder than I imagined.
Room Nine jumped excitedly onto the Jenkins bus ready for a
trip down to see our finished results all in big rows! The Scottish hall was
packed full with 294 entries. The whole of Southland had a opportunity to
enter. There were 3 different age groups
that entered. Wow! I won a merit and
Bonnie won a first prize and 2 special prizes, incredible!
I thought the Social Science Fair was a great experience.
Why? Because in intermediate I hear we have lots of school projects we have to
complete so it is really getting us ready!
By Anikah
The Amazing Social Science Fair
“Eleven hours and thirty minutes left to finish this.” Mrs
Russell screamed. I was terrified because in Room Nine this year our teacher
made us do the social science fair in our inquiry time. We had to choose a
topic, so I chose the Creamota Mill Complex.
We were told to gather background information and also to
interview an expert on our topic. I managed to fit in FIVE of them. I heard there was an exhibition on so I managed to
find some time in the weekends to go there.
Behind some of the facts there were some newspapers merged together. So
I went around reading all of them. In my
interviews somehow I managed to interview the lady who did them so she
photocopied some for me.
When it came to putting it all together, I noticed that my
information wouldn’t all fit on my board. I could only fit nine out of thirty
two pages on. The tough thing was that everyone else got a title board that
fitted in the slots and I never got one. There was a splendid thing though
about my board. It was black not white, so I didn’t have to take my time
sticking coloured paper all over it.
The hall it was held in was in Invercargill so they had to
be taken down. Mrs Russell allowed us to
go to Invercargill in our class time to get some ideas from the other projects
and to see if we won anything. When I
went to mine, I saw three tags on my model. One of them said 1st in the Year 5
and 6 section and the other two said special prize, 1st in the historic section and 1st in
the heritage section. YAY!
After all I am glad that we had to do the social science
fair.

Social Science Fair 2015
“I DON’T
THINK WE’RE GOING TO FINISH our social science project. it’s due in three days. We are only half
finished” Josh yelled. We, Josh, Jay and Buster, were stressing about our
assignment (Livestock Supplies Fire) and it took way longer than we thought. We
had to have it ready for display in the Scottish Hall by the 24th of
June 2015.
We made
progress during the first week by making background information and typed it on
a black computer. The file was called for some reason the Social Science Fair.
On the second Friday, we went through a lot of stress calling the fire department
for an interview. On like the 100th call it paid off and we had
finally got an interview, on Monday 10:30 am with Steve Lee the Gore fire
chief. After the interview, Josh summed up our notes and we all got a whole lot
of information.
Firstly, we went
down to Invercargill on a Jenkins bus. It was an excruciatingly long trip but
we made it. We went down to Rugby Park to watch the rippa tournament. Gore Main
was one of the first teams playing. They were awesome! After that we went to
the Scottish Hall to look at the Social Science Fair projects. There were 294
entries. We were there for an hour. There were some pretty amazing entries in
there.

Our Social Science Experience
Did you know
never to click on pop ups because people can steal your identity? This is one
of the many things we learnt while researching our social science assignment.
Mrs Russell said “11 ½ hours to complete your social science fair project!”
Which got us freaked out! Alisha, Tayla
and I (Jaleesa) worked on our social science fair to achieve our goal to get a
prize but we didn’t win any prizes.
Tayla and I
(Jaleesa) had the idea of doing internet safety. After our experiences with John Parsons, we
got inspired to do this topic. Alisha was away at a funeral and asked to join
us. We made a decision to let Alisha in. We were going to interview the police,
but we didn’t follow through because Tayla, Alisha and I (Jaleesa) didn’t have
enough time.
A colourful
debate was involved in the phase of putting together our information because
Alisha wanted different colours. We searched the net for information. Typing
was mostly done by Alisha so it wasn’t a problem because she was fast.
The Social
Science Fair had over 250 projects in the Scottish Hall. We had lunch and
morning tea at the Social Science Fair expedition and we found ones we were
interested in and ones that we weren’t. Sadly, Tayla was not involved with this
experience because she was at a leadership course.
When we were
at the Social Science Fair we got inspired with ideas for the future. We learnt
a lot and are looking forward to next year.

Our Social Science Fair
Did you know
that the Gore New World throw out about $200 to $300 worth of bread a day? This
is an amazing fact that we found out in one of our interviews. Greer and I did
the Social Sciences Fair, based in the Scottish Hall in Invercargill, on food
wastage. We traveled by bus down to
Invercargill.
When we were
planning, we came up with lots of different topics but fortunately we picked
food wastage. Then we sorted it
out. Our interviews were Supermarket Manager,
Mount Linton Station, Mrs M and parents from Gore Main School. When we were
about half way through Mrs Russell said that we had 11 hours and thirty
minutes, then Greer and I started stressing out that we weren’t going to finish
it! We still had a model to finish! Greer wanted it her way and I wanted it my
way so there was a bit of arguing and trust me, it ended well, because it ended
up my way.
At the
incredible Social Science Fair there were over 200 projects entered and everyone
put lots of effort into their project.
There were
lots of disagreements, but it was fun and confusing at same time.

Social Science Fair
Room Nine had thirty seven days to complete their
social science projects. Room Nine students at Gore Main School were doing
Social Science Fair projects.
It was difficult to select a topic to work on for the Fair,
but we chose the New Zealand flag change. The hardest part was choosing the
colour, model, size and who we were
going to interview.
On the last day, we were struggling to get the
positioning and gluing right. It was difficult to do the hot gluing and
cutting the images and facts.
On the twenty sixth of June Rooms Nine and Five
travelled to Invercargill by bus for the Fair. Many other boards didn’t have
very much information on them, also some had boring videos.
We had a great time, but we wish we gotten a place, but
it was still entertaining.

GABBY, LACHIE AND SAFFIE’S
SOCIAL SCIENCE FAIR EPISODE
“15 minutes
to go people, you should be on to gluing by now!!!” said Mrs Russell. Saffie Lachie and I (Gabby) had to hand in
our project at the Invercargill Scottish Hall by Friday, 26th June.
Mrs Russell forced us to do the Southland Social Science Fair because she
thought it would be a great opportunity!
To be able
to put our project together, we had to type up our background information and
our interview information. We decided to
do our project on bus safety because we wanted to find out why buses do not
have seatbelts. We sent out surveys to the children who go home on the bus.
Their parents had to answer the questions which were, “Do you think buses
should have seatbelts?” Some said yes
and others said no.
Splink,
splosh splash went the paint on our model. We were making a mess, but we think
it was looking affective. To make the board come together, we had to collect
all the data and glue it on our board. But
of course, we had to make it look good, not just gluing it anywhere or throwing
it on. Saffie bought a yellow bus to
school and there was our model complete. I think it looked pretty good from my
point of view.
“COCONUTS!!
294 entries crammed into a little hall,” I screamed. There was a big milk
carton with a giant straw on top. That display was very talented. There was an
enormous amount of projects about technology. They were actually all really
good and Bonnie Miller actually won. She did hers on the Sargent Dan mill.
This wasn’t
the best project ever that we have done.
We could have done better on our model and gluing but it was our first
social science fair. We learnt a lot from our research. Social Science Fair
“Are we going to finish?” said Rueban frantically.
We, Reuben and Rueban, were worried we weren’t going to
finish the Social Science Fair entry! We
had to enter our assignment in the Social Science Fair in the Scottish Hall in Invercargill.
It was due on 26th of June Friday 2015. Mrs Russell said it was a
good opportunity for us to improve our writing skills.
Reuben struggled as he heard we needed to plan and make and
enter a social science board into the Social Science Fair. We had to choose a
subject for the Social Science Fair.
Rueben and I, choose “Are we using water wisely and how?”
Putting all of our work together was really hard because the
black paper wasn’t sticking. We took 30 minutes to stick it all together. It
was really challenging trying not to break the display board. The board was
really sticky with glue at the end, which was annoying.
The Social Science Fair was in the Scottish Hall in the
fantastic Invercargill. This year the outcome was amazing with many entries
came going through. There was one certain entry that stood out and that was
Bonnie Miller’s board. It was based on Sgt Dan. Her model was massive and it
had amazing detail and we could tell she put a lot of time and effort into it.
Last year not everybody finished, but this year all of us
did. We were really proud of what we had done and that we finished.
